Year-round pier

Updated: Sep 14

Generally, the goal is to have a pier that doesn't need to be taken out during the winter. A year-round pier that withstands winter ice is feasible, but it typically demands specific features from the shoreline.

Firstly, it's crucial to understand how the ice behaves during its departure. Does it flow onto the beach, or is there a significant opening of the lake or sea in front of the beach that might cause the ice to move in the spring? These two scenarios are typically responsible for the movement of piers.

If there isn't significant ice movement along the shore, the pier can remain in place for the winter, or a permanent fixed pier can be constructed on the shore. If the beach is new and there's no prior experience with spring ice behavior, observing the neighbors' piers might provide insights into what type of pier is suitable for the location.

In most areas, any movements caused by ice on a fixed pier can be corrected with minor adjustments. Simply drive the adjusted posts back deep with a sledgehammer, and the pier will be stable again.

Fluctuations in water levels do not hinder a year-round fixed or pontoon pier. The deck height of a fixed pier is set according to the highest water level, while a pontoon pier adjusts its height based on the water level.
