Pontoon pier

There is a common perception that a pontoon pier is the only method for constructing a pier. While a pontoon pier is a suitable choice for many beaches and occasionally the only viable option, not every pier is a pontoon pier.
A pontoon pier is often favored when the goal is to maintain the deck of the pier at a consistent height relative to the water's surface. Being a floating structure, the pontoon dock adjusts to changes in the water level.

One reason to opt for a pontoon pier is that ice tends to accumulate on the shore, requiring the pier to be brought onto land during winter. Pontoon piers can typically be disassembled and transported in sections to the beach for the colder months.
A pontoon pier is also ideal when the shoreline is unusually deep, exceeding 6 feet. Additionally, if the beach bottom is extremely soft and absorbing, as seen in swamps and marshes, traditional pole or trestle pier solutions may not be appropriate.

One characteristic of pontoon docks is their tendency to sway slightly when floating on waves. If you prefer a completely stable pier, you might consider a trestle pier, whose cover elements can be removed in the fall, floated to the shore, and brought onto land for the winter.
However, most beaches are suitable for a pier that stands firmly with strong poles. Even those with slightly more challenging beach conditions often choose to do some straightening of the poles in the spring after the ice melts, rather than dismantling and reassembling the pontoon pier every autumn and spring.
Below is a picture of the Tahoe jetty model, which can be constructed as a pontoon jetty, with round log posts, or as a trestle jetty.
