Residential beaches often have a gentle slope. Many beaches require piers over 100 feet long, which are not considered excessive. During low tide, these long piers can nearly touch dry land. If the water level fluctuates significantly, the necessity for a long pier becomes even more pronounced on gradually deepening shores.
If the dock is too short, it can be difficult to manage the boat and outboard motor in late fall when they might hit the bottom. Additionally, having a dock that allows for normal swimming throughout the entire cottage season is beneficial.
