A long pier to a shallow shore

When dealing with a shallow shore, selecting a long pier is often required. In choosing the foundation type for a long pier, it is crucial to understand the behavior of ice during the spring thaw. If the ice doesn't compact or move significantly, and the beach is typically shielded from strong storms, a fixed pier with log posts can be a reliable, low-maintenance option. However, if ice compaction and movement occur in the spring, opting for a pontoon pier or a trestle pier might be necessary, as both can be easily lifted onto the shore for the winter.
An example of a long pier for a shallow shore is the Kenai model with a trestle foundation.

Fixed log post piers and trestle piers are advantageous because they remain stationary. In contrast, a floating pontoon pier moves slightly with the waves, whereas a fixed pier remains stable above the water.
If the water body’s surface level fluctuates significantly during the summer, this variation must be considered when installing a fixed pier. The installation should be based on the highest water level. This consideration is unnecessary for a pontoon pier, as it automatically adjusts to the water level.
